I think this is the difference between the X-Prizes (http://www.xprize.org/)
and the N-Prize (http://www.n-prize.com/) and SparkFun's Autonomous Vehicle
Competition (http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/news.php?id=258). I think you
can have a monetary prize small enough to keep it light-hearted, but big
enough to pay for a part of the winner's budget.

The good people aren't in it for the money, and the best prizes recognize
that.

Also, competition is *a* motivator for *some* people. Nothing that happens
on the hackerspace scene works for everyone.

No one has put forth anything concrete, and in the meantime we'll be
experimenting with models at our space (Baltimore Node). I encourage those
who have the time, interest, and means to do the same. We'll either stumble
onto something insanely awesome or find a few things that don't work.
