Hmm, eastern us coast does have a lot of nasty water... which could simulate more noxious alien atmosphere
but probably not what we'd want to do for a first step sea stead.

Keep this in mind as we go forward. Are you a member of NYC Resistor, Alpha One Labs or other NYC area hackerspace?
(Are you going to World Maker Faire this weekend? I SOOOO wish I could be there!)

It was going to be a transparent diving bell type thing made out of a solid acrylic dome, filled with air and tied to some anchors. Then I saw that someone had already build something similar using a transparent tarp for the dome with a net over it that was tied to anchors (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Phj3lLEtWlk).

The gear includes a thick transparent tarp, large cargo net, and a scuba 'hookah', surface supply setup (to aid in setup and swimming down to the base). I live in Brooklyn New York if anyone knows a good location (most are too polluted or have heavy boat traffic) or would want to help out in installing it somewhere. In any case the general concept could be used to make a prototype to do tests with (isolation, power generation, etc). If someone has a good location near them I could maybe bring the gear and we could set it up there. Alternatively we could contact the 'bubble room' people (in the video)

Someone noted that the there are many ties between sea and space but technology the least of them, and that in some ways is true. Especially when you look at the converted oil rig architecture, there is little practical application of that tech in space. Someone else however noted the link between underwater and space, which is exactly where I and the spacer faction of seasteaders want to take this. The political and ecological work done by seasteaders is also useful, but by it's nature I think this group is really focused on the tech.

Submerging a habitat is virtually free compared to placing it in orbit. Space actually has an advantage of allowing us to use inflatable technology that is not practical submarine. An argument I made during the 100yss conference is that seasteading is a sandbox for spacesteading. Sure some things will need to be adapted, but there is a lot we can test and in doing so develop the foundation and confidence that there is a commercially viable interest in a space industry. I ask people to look at America's founding, with large corporations not forming or coming onboard until small communities put it all on the line to make the move to the new frontier. The oceans may not be our destination, but it will be on our journey.
