This sounds really exciting! Ive been wanting to learn basic crypto and security.. Can't add much more other than vigorous enthusiasm for the planners and a forward on to the AnarchaFeminist Hacker Hive listserv :)

The thought is that it's for activists and the general public. We could probably do a poll of some sort and see what level people are interested in learning at, and set workshops at that point.

I find it's easier to give people a general introduction to things, and then point at a more elaborate lesson online. For example, I could explain the basic difference between classical and modern cryptography, and then point them at Dan Boneh's (excellent!) free online cryptography class for the more advanced lessons.

If multiple people are interested in giving talks, we could do a bunch of smaller talks.... 20-30 minutes, giving an introduction to a tool and then demonstrating it. Whatever works, the ultimate goal is to empower anyone who wants to learn.

What's the anticipated level of difficulty? Is this crypto for activists/ devs/reverse engs?

As a reverse engineer I'm interested and curious if I can help out :-)

Yes, definitely just a rough sketch so far - http://openetherpad.org/Z7qnzVh9A4

If we can find a few folks who are interested in helping, a planning meeting sounds like an excellent next step.

Thanks so much for suggesting this on the list, Ryan!

It is worth noting that this is a rough brainstorm, and nothing has been confirmed, dates or otherwise. Assuming there are no objections, would anyone be interested in having a planning meet-up, maybe this upcoming weekend?

dear sudoroom,
let's get on this - http://www.cryptoparty.org/wiki/CryptoParty#North_America

aestetix and I were discussing Sunday September 23rd as a potential date

Here are a few ideas:

Workshops from 12 to 6pm
Crypto Workshops throughout the day (2-hours each?)
Internet access and power outlets would need to be available in the classroom area.
Speaker Track 2 -6pm (in a separate room):
aestetix - basics of crypto
anonymous - ???
Jake - Tor
micah - EFF
Food 6-7pm
???
Party from 7-9pm

What do you guys think?

I'd definitely be interested in helping organize this event.
Let me know if you are interested in helping, attending, or if this date sounds like it will work well.
Best,
--Ryan (@ryanj)
