The usual generation of power from waste is to use microbes to break down waste material into methane, which is then burned (or powers a fuel cell) . This advance from Oregon State University, USA has the microbes creating free electrons which directly produces electricity in a fuel cell...

Waste handling and power generation are two major issues for any long term space habitation and humanity's survival. Such Bio-hacking research (or education) projects are well worth studying and would probably be of interest to the Hackerspace Space Program.
