If anyone is looking for a cheap, easy SMT project for classes at your
space, I put the design for our <$3 SMT blinky badge on-line.  It's
got a 10-part alternating flasher circuit from the Forrest Mimms book,
and a bunch of SMT practice pads in various formats on the back.  The
