Makers local 256 has a neat way to get to know new people that want to
become a member. You fill out your paper application and bring it with you
each time you visit. Then the new person has to meet and talk with everyone
there to try to figure out which ones are board members. Because you need
to have two board members sign your application. Once that's done the
Secretary sends a mass email to all the current members asking for any
input if they know or have met the new person so they can say they are
super nerdy or kinda sketchy, etc. Then based on all this input the board
has a meeting on new members to yay or nay them into the membership. So
this process allows the members to get to know the new person and vice
versa before they even become a member. Because as soon as you become a
member you are added to the mailing list for members and given the code for
the front door lock. You are also given a login for the wiki and an email
address @ makerslocal.org.
