Getting a nice space certainly could take longer, but I think after 6
months, to keep the community going, you may want to set up at least
some temporary solutions, be it temporary lease in highly suboptimal
space or trying out the "distributed space" OP proposed.  Doing that
in the first 6 months would dilute the initial focus of finding a proper
space.

(When we were setting up brmlab, in the first 4 months before we got a
space I tried to champion the idea of "hack points", basically flats or
such in principle open to others to work on specific projects, somewhat
similar to the OP's idea. But it did not catch on at all for us, and I
don't regret that. Don't panic during the first months.)
