It's not a matter of "cannot." It's a question of cost to validate that the contest conforms with every global jurisdiction. Corporations aren't interested in the politics of the global hackerspace movement; they're interested in selling to us, so again it becomes a cost\benefit equation.

Agreed, but in this precise case, this is not about not wanting to open to
international participation, but it is a claim that they can not do so for
unspecified legal reasons. That's quite different.
Hence my demands for clarifications.
