You can use Tor on insecure networks and eg. ssh tunnel to a location of
your choice and, voila, you have a pretty secure tunnel, with nice
properties such as (a) your upstream does not know where you connect to
and (b) someone watching your tunnel endpoint does not know where you
connect from.

This is a default use case for Tor and I know more than a dozen people
using this setup every day.
