[hackerspaces] Out with the "hackers"... In with the "makers" and the "fixers"

google news search, the hacker search on google search is entirely 
different.. So you searched the main stream media and found exactly what you 
were looking for.

hackers tend not to go too much advertising and being in the news, its part 
of their nature. media also tends to focus on negativity. Its not really a 
surprise.

I doubt anyone will argue with you that joe public has that interpretation 
but just changing something because somebody somewhere decides to coin a new 
term for whatever reason ( again ) is also nothing new.

But there is no way I'm basing what I want to do on what  joe public 
perceives .. Well except maybe I'd have avoided the proxmark, but that’s for 
other reasons ;)

the new resurgence in hackerspaces might actually make the difference in a 
lot of peoples minds., that is if people stop going around constantly 
reminding people hackers have a bad name, if the people involved in it won't 
advocate education vs compliance, why should those that really don't care.

First two pages of a Google search on "hacker" (no hyperlinks included
-- you can find these yourself on Google).  There may be a  few
positive uses of the word in this list, but they're hard to find among
the negatives.  Say what you will, this is what the world conceives
hackers to be.  You folks can try to buck this trend, but I have
better ways to spend my time than to defend a word that is of no
importance to me.
