Haptic shirts are definitely a possibility. USDoD built some that used small vibrators and/or pins to give pilots an alternative sense. Also pin-array systems have been used for limited vision replacement. Its been a long while since I dug into this tech. My last writeup on VR was in 2003. (http://vr.isdale.com/) Most of the links are long 404.
