So.... there is a large backstory here.
You may already know this, but your message makes me think you may not;
forgive me if this is unneeded information:
In many (most?) parts of europe, there are literally things known as
'squatters rights'. Berlin, for example, has many huge buildings which
have been taken over by artists who just run the place. I know several
EU hackerspaces which are existing this way.
The details of the laws vary, but in short, taking over an abandoned
building, even if there is an owner, isn't the same as doing it in the
US. I'm sure someone here could provide more details.
