Howdy,
You're invited to drop by the Public Library of Science (1160 Battery St, Suite 100, SF) starting at 4:30pm on Friday March 9th for food and drinks to hash out ideas for a possible "Open Access" hackathon (for everyone, not just coders!) coming up in the near future.
Lots of exciting news right now with the deflation of the Research Works Act, the community's SOPA/PIPA backlash, FRPAA's introduction in the Senate and House, and so much more! Let's celebrate these developments and create tangible visions for the future of Open Access:
On the 9th, we'll put together a short list of "sample" projects, scope them for a weekend timeframe, and brainstorm more generally about what can be done for Open Access to flourish. You may want to bring your laptop or other internet-connected device, since if all goes well, we should be doing a bit of discovery/initial research as we discuss! Some bits already on the table are listed below.
Please RSVP by replying to this message, and mention if you know anyone in particular who would be interested in coming! If you're interested and can't make it, please let us know and we'll keep in touch about the full event as it develops.
See you on the 9th @PLoS for #OAhack scoping

P.S. Existent (remix-able) Ideas:
+ Category: "Show the Impact of OA" (Data is a problem in OA discussions, examples are too often anecdotal)
=> Identify data sources, make them more accessible (e.g. journal prices over time)
=> Show the impact of the NIH policy to make research available online for free http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/
=> Use critical data points effectively, especially from open data sources
=> Create graphics / visualizations of critical data points to quickly and easily show the impact of OA
=> Make witnessing the impact of OA interactive, such as with a game, a map, etc.
=> Create simulations to help folks understand the benefits of OA from different perspectives (e.g. patient advocacy)
+ Category: "Organize Tools and Tactics for OA"
=> Learn and grow from PopVox and other tools used in response to the Research Works Act https://www.popvox.com/bills/us/112/hr3699
=> Create more tools to identify/advertise individuals' and institutions' "Open Access" with support badges, iconography, etc.
=> Create media (e.g. writings, audio, video, multimedia, etc) to explain OA, communicate opportunities, and appeal to different groups.
=> Launch a "sponsor an institution" map to facilitate the creation of OA repositories at universities and research institutions. (e.g. fork http://marketplace.civiccommons.org/apps/adopt-hydrant)
=> Create or extend chrome/firefox addons, widgets, toolbars, bookmarklets, etc:
===> (Inspiration: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ask-the-author-on-pubmed/)
===> Build a browser addon to track cost of a user's online research [maybe simulate with roles such as: a patient, student, researcher in the US, a researcher not in the US, etc]
=> OA Outreach / Marketing:
===> Specifically target and work with Academic Societies to move toward OA (low-hanging fruit!)
===> Create marketing/campaign strategies, including use cases and market profiles.
===> Outline and execute social media strategies by identifying pain points, opportunities, and new audiences for OA.
===> More and new ways to participate in or follow important events and actions (e.g. a SPARC "Day of Action")
