[hackerspaces] Safe Space Policies?

Hi guys,
I'm wondering if any other spaces on the list have had difficulty
implementing a Safe Space Policy.
We've had one proposed and voted in by the group but several members insist
on attempting to cripple it (knowingly or not) by refusing all definitions
from it, as well as removing provisions for being accountable for your
actions in relation to the policy, stating that it's 'unethical'.
I'd put it down to the usual "geeks don't like being told what to do or
getting in trouble for their actions" but it seems that Noisebridge had
similar issues.
Thoughts/experiences please?
