[hackerspaces] Hacker space network monitoring for average users?

I want to setup and lock away all the network gear for a particular
nameless hacker space. There's a box that we have setup specifically for
monitoring the network. Is there any open source tool any other space is
using to display on a monitor a generalized network health status that
an average not technically minded user could potentially understand?
