We're going to use that for life science/biomed-related things,
consumables, chemicals, and the like. Ability to shoot a picture
of the item via webcam and instantly upload it is very important.

Does PartKeepr fit the bill? It seems to do that. 
Would edDB.net be able to do that as well?
