[hackerspaces] 501c3 and hackerspaces in US

What is your experience with the timeline of getting a 501(c)3?
How long did it take to draw up the papers? 
How long to get determination/confirmation from IRS?

Also any heard of/experience with a Trust using 501(c)3 instead of a corporation?
One benefit of a Trust is that the Trustee doesnt get voted out by membership/board of directors.
which may or may not be a benefit depending on which side of that vote you would be on.
