I've been reading up on the FidoNET protocol lately because I've been
considering writing an implementation to use with Project Byzantium to
help bridge backhaul gaps. Older store-and-forward bundle
transmission protocols are worth another look I think, but I also
think that they would be application specific. Something like FidoNET
would be ideal for (say) synching blog or image board posts across
multiple nodes, but perhaps less so for a twitter-alike app. There
are also protocols that solve some of the same problems as FidoNET in
use in some areas right now, like Forban and the Dandelion Message
Service.
