That method of getting everybody up to speed works pretty well,
though.  Even if you never touch the code you have a basic familiarity
with how everything works, and that can help in a crisis.  When your
job is to stare at the same thing every day, you tend to blank on
obvious things, and someone from another department asking if you've
checked foo, where foo is that obvious thing that you tune out every
day can save a lot of time in crisis management and remediation.  I
worked for a company that used the bootcamp method once, and I found
it very helpful.
