generic question, generic response. virtualisation, resources, dynamic loader, wad files, archives.

as a start look for known headers.

  Its a cheesy little tool, but check out ResHacker:  http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/  As long as the binary hasn't been crushed, its good at retrieving/swapping embedded resources.
