essentially it's a distributed transaction log that prevents
double-spending.

Interesting tidbits from other places: if you'd bought $100 USD worth of
bitcoins 8 months ago, you could sell them for $14100 USD now.

The computing power of Bitcoin Mining has reached about half the total
computing of all the top 500 Supercomputing projects in the world COMBINED,
and within a few weeks will surpass it.
