I think it would. I've seen a few examples outside on my tour through the us,
one already mentioned (Black Lodge near Redmond), and the other is a recent
one called Unallocated Space (http://www.unallocatedspace.org/uas/) in the
general area of Washington, DC, that is basically in the middle of nowhere.

Of course, in the US the situation is somewhat different, where most of the
people generally live in subburbs around a metropolitan area, geographically
quite spread out.

I'm thinking of other spaces. Well, there's syn2cat which is in a suburb
of Luxembourg city, but that's about half an hour driving away from the
center so probably not a good example. I know more exist (just have a look
at the list on hackerspaces.org), and I would have loved to visit that
feral tech farm you mentioned but they were closed during my US roadtrip.
