  We have  seen things you people  wouldn't believe.  We  have seen an
  abandoned place given  back to the community, We  have seen children
  attending the  afterschool and social activities at  the CPO Experia
  rather  than  staying in  the  decadence  of  district abandoned  by
  authorities.  We  have seen multi-ethnical  cultural events, theater
  and musical  gigs, art exibitions, hi-level training  courses at the
  CPO  Experia,  in  a   district  which  just  offers  arcade  rooms,
  "carnazzerie", deterioration and neglect.  We have seen willing boys
  rolling up their sleeves and working day by day and creating a magic
  place, focus of social and cultural activities, vital for a district
  that, without the CPO Experia,  has really few things to offer.  And
  all those  moments, will be lost  in the time...  like  tears in the
  rain...

  "Few minutes  ago (5:30am)  the police had  cleared out  the Popular
   Center "Experia", an old cinema (owned by the Region) that since 17
   years  has been  one  of the  few  social aggregation  places in  a
   popular  district  of Catania.   The  boys  (and girls)  completely
   restored it,  transforming a dilapidated  place in a hub  of social
   activities -  afterschool, games, sport,  etc. - that  was opposing
   effectively  the Mafia  presence  in the  neighborhoods, where  the
   Experia was one of a few boss-free and drug-free zones.  The police
   arrived at dawn, loaded with  violence and without notice.  We have
   been  told  several  children  got injured.   The  evacuation  'was
   decided  by  Dr.  Serpotta,  Catanese  magistrate not  particularly
   well-recognised  in activities  against  mafia, and  preceded by  a
   press  campaign of  the Alleanza  Nazionale party,  which  has been
   governing the city since many  years with the results we are seeing
   these days. It os 'a tough day for the slender democracy in Catania
   and the guys (and girls) of Experia appeal to solidarity of all the
   Democrats and the antimafia people.

3 We resist

Brother  and  sisters of  Freaknet  MediaLab,  of  Poetry Hacklab  and
Dyne.org  are  astonished  and  hallucinated  by  what  happened  this
morning.  Seventeen years  of culture,  antimafia,  social activities,
classes, activities at the highest level swept away in a second by the
decision of  the magistrate  who for years  seemed to have  focued his
activities in fighting the Social/Aggregation Centres.

It seems very likely the  eventuality that the clearing out request of
the  CPO Experia is  an idea  of the  current "Sovrintendente  ai Beni
Culturali"  (the cultural  heritage counsellor)  of  the municipality,
Gesualdo Campo, who  in 1999 allowed the local  university law faculty
to start works around the area  of the Purita' (close to the border of
the CPO Experia), even knowing that that area was containing important
archaelogical findings  very important for  the city. The  CPO Experie
fought against this, along with  the Antico Corso comitee, in order to
build a nursery and an archeological park which was meant to exalt the
area. It might be maybe for his personal that Doc. Campo was attending
the  operations  today morning.  What  we know  for  sure  is that  we
assisted to the umpteenth defeat  of a city surronded by decadency and
degrade.

Our disdain  for this operation is  very high, our  solidarity and our
love goes  to the CPO Experia  Companions and all those  who, like us,
believes in a future of Culture, Freedom and Sharing.

  "Ne  abbiamo  viste  cose,  che  voi 'umani'  non  potreste  neanche
   immaginare.  Abbiamo  visto uno spazio  abbandonato restituito alla
   comunita',  abbiamo visto  bambini frequentare  il doposcuola  e le
   attivita' sociali al CPO Experia anziche' restare nel degrado di un

   manifestazioni   culturali  multietniche,  spettacoli   teatrali  e

   laddove  il quartiere  offre so  lamente sale  giochi, carnazzerie,

   le maniche e lavorare giorno  per giorno creando uno spazio magico,
   punto di riferimento per attivita'  sociali e cultura li vitali per
   un quartiere che, senza il CPO  Experia, ha ben poco da offrire.  E
   tutti questi  momenti andranno  perduti nel tempo...   come lacrime
   nella pioggia...  E' tempo di...  REAGIRE!"

  Poco fa  (5:30am, NdR) la  polizia ha sgomberato il  centro popolare
  "Experia", un  vecchio cinema (di  proprieta' della Regione)  che da
  diciassette anni costituiva uno  dei pochi posti di aggregazione dei
  quartieri  popolari catanesi.   I ragazzi  lo  avevano ristrutturato
  completamente,   trasformando  il   locale  fatiscente   nel  centro
  propulsore  di  attivitX  civili  - doposcuola,  giocoleria,  sport,
  ecc.   - che  contrastavano  efficacemente la  presenza mafiosa  nei
  quartieri, dove  l'Experia costituiva una pochissime  zone libere da
  boss  e  droga.   Le   forze  dell'ordine  sono  arrivate  all'alba,
  caricando  con violenza  e  senza preavviso.   Mi segnalano  diversi
  ragazzi feriti.   Lo sgombero e'  stato deciso dal  dottor Serpotta,
  magistrato  catanese non  particolarmente  distintosi nell'attivita'
  antimafia,  e  preceduto  da  una  campagna di  stampa  di  Alleanza
  Nazionale,  che  a  Catania   governa  da  anni  coi  risultati  che
  conosciamo.   E'  una  giornata  difficile  per  l'esile  democrazia
  catanese e i giovani dell'Experia fanno appello alla solidarieta' di
  tutti i democratici e gli antimafiosi.

5.2 Resistiamo

I fratelli e le sorelle del Freaknet MediaLab, del Poetry Hacklab e di
Dyne.org   sono  esterrefatti   ed  allucinati   da   quanto  accaduto
stamattina.   Diciassette   anni  di  cultura,   antimafia,  attivita'
sociali,  corsi,  iniziative  di  altissimo livello  spazzate  via  in
un'attimo dalla decisione di quel magistrato che da anni pare avere il
chiodo fisso dei Centri Sociali.

Appare  probabile l'ipotesi che  la richiesta  di sgombero  del centro
sociale sia  partita dall'attuale Sovrintendente ai  Beni Culturali di
Catania,  Gesualdo Campo,  che nel  1999 diede  il suo  benestare alla
Facolta' di Giurisprudenza per  i lavori da effettuare nell'area della
Purita'  (nella parte  esterna del  CPO Experia),  pur sapendo  che si
trattava  di  un  luogo  contenente  reperti  archeologici  di  grande
rilevanza  per la  storia della  cittX.  Contro  questo scempio  si e'
battuto  il CPO  Experia, insieme  al comitato  Antico  Corso, perche'
nell'area  espropriata da  Giurisprudenza nascesse  una  bambinopoli e
fosse  creato un  Parco Archeologico  per valorizzare  i ritrovamenti.
Forse e' per questa sua vittoria personale che il dottor Campo stamane
assisteva compiaciuto  alle ripetute cariche  delle forze dell'ordine:
quello che noi  sappiamo per certo e' che  si e'trattato dell'ennesima
sconfitta di una citta' soffocata dal degrado.

Il  nostro sdegno  verso  questa operazione  e'  altissimo, la  nostra
solidarieta' ed il  nostro affetto vanno alle Compagne  ed ai Compagni
del CPO Experia,  a tutti coloro che sostengono gli  spazi liberi e le
TAZ ed  a tutti quelli  che, come noi,  credono in un futuro  fatto di
Antimafia, Antifascismo, Cultura, Liberta' e Condivisione.

Noi pretendiamo l'immediata restituzione  degli spazi sgomberati a chi
in questi  17 anni  ha dimostrato  con i fatti  di saperli  gestire al
meglio, cioe' ai Compagni ed alle Compagne del CPO Experia.
