I am Jerry Isdale, the founder of Maui Makers, a hackerspace in development on the island of Maui, Hawaii. At present MauiMakers.com is the most concrete realization of our space, as we are still in the early organization phase. I have some experience with creating spaces, having been a founding member of CrashSpace.org in Los Angeles. I am very interested in reading up on the finance aspect from others, as currently MauiMakers is operating out of my pocket (and garage). I expect to have an LLC up later this year and a 501(c)3 when the IRS gets their Cyber Assistant going. (maybe they need help?)

CrashSpace has been inspirational to me. It started with Sean Bonner stating he was going to stop just talking and get a space opened. Within 3 months we had an LLC and a rented space. We didnt have any equipment to draw in members, yet we managed to get enough paying members with the next 3 months to cover operating costs out of membership dues. CrashSpace offers members the work areas and a great active community. Maker equipment is starting to accumulate - electronics tools, makerbot, silhouette paper/vinyl cutter, and lately a member set up his personal lathe & CNC mill at the space.

I noted that past articles on the list seem to be archived only on a monthly basis. Only the original post from June 18 is available on http://lists.hackerspaces.org/pipermail/finance/ at this time (mid July). How often are the archives updated? Is there any way to make it more frequent?
