Yep depends on the decision. Here's some recent examples from Melbourne Makerspace in FL:

1. Projector died. Needed for classes. One member just went and bought one for ~$600 new. Since we don't have enough extra in our coffers to pay for it then we'll pass the hat around and pay him back slowly over time for as big a portion as we can.

2. Move to a bigger space? All hands meeting with report from treasurer showing our income vs expenses with old space rent/bills and new space rent/bills. We had to hold off for a few months until we got a few more members. Then we met again and saw we could do it so we did it.

On Thu, Oct 12, 2017 at 4:40 PM, Chris Weiss <cweiss@gmail.com> wrote:

depends on the decision. if it's minor and undo-able it just gets done. if there are legal ramifications the elected board handles is. if it's not-optional they pick the best option (rental insurance for example, best cost per needed coverage). other things get taken to the membership with a formal vote.

On Thu, Oct 12, 2017 at 3:31 PM Matt Joyce <matt@nycresistor.com> wrote:

All power is descendent from the Orb.

On Thu, Oct 12, 2017 at 4:28 PM, Sébastien Gendre <seb@k-7.ch> wrote:

Hello Worlds.
When you need to take decisions about your space or your community, how
do you proceed?

- With the whole community?
- Inside a restricted committee?
- With do-ocraty principle?
- Other?
Usually, I read that hackerspaces proceed with a balance between
do-ocraty and consensus with the whole community. Which is in line with
one of the hacker values: No authority.

But at our hackerspace, all decisions about our space or our community
are taken by a restricted committee. The freedom left to the members are for
their own projects. Is it make us a false hackerspace?
