I don't think hackerspaces are tied to FLOSS at all. If you want to GNU all the things, good luck with that. But, many of us aren't focused on that sort of project. I know at resistor we use many propietary software suites in addition to open source.

We use Eagle, we use corel draw. Our laser cutter works best with corel draw on windows. And so, that is what is running on the laser cutter CAD system.

Again in hardware, many manufacturers only supply tooling for windows.

Best tool for the job does not always include open source options.

And for some folks, the goal is the project they are working on, not how they are working on it.

So, I'd say do whatever floats your boat, but don't expect hackerspaces to line up and support FLOSS across the board. That was never the point. Even in european hackerspaces.

I could see this as acceptable where it's significantly better than any
open-source alternative.

Also, a lot of people who are there to hack atoms rather than bits don't
want to take the time to learn something other than the proprietary
software they're used to, because they're not software guys (hence the
prevalence of Windows).

Another thing that comes up is that sometimes people (including me)
check out an open-source program, see that it doesn't do what they need
to do, and then don't notice when useful features are added later. I
know a guy who hates Linux because he had a bad experience with it 10
years ago, and still insists that it's terrible.

They don't even let you have one linux machine?

Most people just use their own laptops, though, so it's not usually a
big issue.
