I knew *of* them for some time, including one that's local (my good friends at Dallas Makerspace) but I didn't really get a good feel for the movement until I visited New Factory in Tampere, Finland for a KDE conference (Akademy). New Factory is more of a collaboration center but that includes a makerspace along with incubator and other related resources. I've been there more than once now and it's given me a sense of what's possible. Unfortunately, here in the US we seem to get constrained by corporate experience, something that doesn't afflict my Finnish and other European compatriots so much... (sorry, /soapbox)
