For heating, there is also a traditional type of fireplace that's been
used in Korea for centuries. It's basically a firebox on one side of
the house, with smoke tubes that travel under the floor and a chimney
on the other side. It's called an Ondol. Check out:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ondol
http://www.koreabrand.net/en/know/know_view.do?CATE_CD=0005&SEQ=2320

Arclight

On Sun, Nov 18, 2012 at 9:02 AM, Lee von Kraus <leevonk@gmail.com> wrote:
> To stay warm you should use a very efficient heating system which transfers
> heat primarily to your bodies and secondarily to your habitat. The general
> concept for doing this is to have glowing coals inside of a sealed, highly
> insulated 'container'. For indoor implementation this is called a 'korsi' or
> 'kotatsu. For outdoor use this is called a
'fire bed'. Here's a description
> of the two:
>
> For indoors use a Korsi:
> 1) Get a large metal (non-galvanized) container that has a tightly sealing
> top for it.
> 2) Get a lot of wood ash.
> 3) mix the ash with water to make a paste.
> 4) coat the inside walls of your container with a ~1 inch layer ash paste.
> Do not put paste on the containers lid. (on a side note, this same concept is similar
> to ways in which one can make a forge capable of getting to 2,000 degrees:
> 5) Outside of your tent, light some coals inside of the container. When the
> fire has burned down and the coals are glowing without fire put a thin layer
> of ash over them and some dirt over
(~1-2 inch layer) that.
> 6) Now you have a system that will slowly release a lot of heat for ~10
> hours.
> 7) Build a way to efficiently distribute this heat to you and others in the
> tent: Build a 'korsi' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korsi) (in japan it's
> called a 'kotatsu': http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kotatsu). This is basically
> a short table which is placed over the coal container. Over this short table
> you drape a big blanket which extends over the edges of the table to the
> floow around it. Now you and guests can lie under the blanket to sleep (or
> even just to hang out during cold days).
> NOTE: You have to make sure the coal container is totally sealed so that
> carbon monoxide doesn't escape and kill you.
>
> Without a tent a fire bed will keep you warm while you sleep during the
> winter:
>
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDwTKAWhLfg
> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ch8Wek0d-Q
> The nice thing is without a sealed tent you don't have to worry at all about
> carbon monoxide poisoning. The general rule is you dig the hole 8 inches
> deep. You let the fire burn in the hole for 2 hours. Then you cover the
> coals with 4 inches of dirt.
