A group of young scholars is seeking a small number of participants<br>
for a panel on hackerspaces for the 2013 International Communication<br>
Association (ICA) convention in London. Hackerspaces are here thought<br>
to be a vital touchstone for informal education, shared rituals,<br>
resistant media practices, and various amateur pre-histories. An<br>
interdisciplinary perspective on hackerspaces, rather than hacker<br>
culture in general, will help to bridge the many disciplinary<br>
perspectives already at play in this field by grounding the discussion<br>
in terms of specific people, places, and events.<br>

Possible topics include:<br>
<br>
* Hacker motivation for technological appropriation and tinkering<br>
* Spaces and social environments for creative and technical making<br>
* Trans-national hobbyist networks<br>
* Gender, race and ethnicity in hacker culture<br>
* Hackers in popular culture<br>
* Hacker literacies<br>
