They're awesome for viewing materials structure. Learned so much working with one in college. The difference between the picture in the book and the real thing is significant.

Just start hosting "Spectrometer" parties and have people bring stuff to look at. Then have a somewhat knowledgeable person talk about ti and explain why. Now you're got yourself a very informative class. Do that until you figure out some hard science to mess with..... Or you could ship it to The Brain Tank. I'll find a way to afford the DHL service. :-)

They're great for general forensics, sample analysis. Heck with one you've got basically 25% needed equipment for a CSI lab.

On Mon, Jun 20, 2011 at 10:20 PM, Andrew Orr <andrew@andreworr.ca> wrote:

Our hackerspace[1] got offered a mass spectrometer, but we have to figure out what kinds of thing we'll use it for before we can get it. The guy who is donating it doesn't want it to sit idle or be put in storage or whatever.

So my question to you lot is: What kinds of projects / use cases does a mass spectrometer have in a hackerspace?

Cheers,
