Ahh, guess it depends on the group climate. We didn't feel it
required major signage or imposing zones, just a quick post on the
member's list in the beginning clued people in on the webcam's
presence and we haven't had any backlash over it since (people are
welcome to shut it off as they please).

We also didn't want to have webcams everywhere (our space is broken
up into four separate large rooms), but decided on one in our clean
workshop so (primarily) members could see if anything was going on
at the space at any particular time. It's not set to record and it
doesn't have audio enabled.

Aside from the permanent webcam, we've occasionally had a HD device
setup for public talks with audio enabled so folks could watch
online.

Cheers,
some IRC channels for hackerspaces in general, or French
hackerspaces.

The main argument against the use of cameras for broadcasting of
hackerspace activity was that the people visiting or working at
the hackerspace just didn't want to be filmed in any way -
something related to control of one's personal image, basically.

One of the solutions that was suggested was to have zones that are
clearly marked as camera zones, where people should be aware that
their activities and faces would be broadcast for the intaweb's
viewing/educational pleasure - tape on the floor, big signs
signalling the area come to mind, and of course placing it all in
a way that circulation in the hackerspace is not disrupted for
members who just don't want to be seen.
I think if we had some additional incentive to keep the
cameras on more would do it. How about we count the hours the
stream was up over the weekend and see who had their cameras
on the longest?
