It's not really DIY at 50Mbps.

=P

On Fri, May 21, 2010 at 5:17 PM, Sylva1n <sylv41n@gmail.com> wrote:

Streaming talks is nice, but allows not much interactivity, except
asking question through IRC during Q&A sessions ... not much better
than watching said talks on youtube days or moths later.

OTOH, with a good net connexion (>50Mb) and some beefy hardware,
shouldn't it be possible to setup at least 3 or 4 small to medium size
rooms, with bidirectional HD video (720p-ish), where transatlantic
workshops and/or panel discussions could take place ?
Such DIY-telepresence could be a great demonstration of what ingenuity
can do to reduce drastically the number of unnecessary transatlantic
flights.

Wikipedia indicates a 14 Mbps bitrate for h264/base
profile/1280×720@30fps, has any of you experience with streaming as
such bitrate ?
Can a modern 6-to-8 core machine do real-time transcoding from a
webcam (eg. Logitech PRO 9000, 960x720@13fps) through x264 at such
rate ?
How hard is it to set-up a 50 Mbps reliable transatlantic IP link ?
Can a neighborly-friendly ISP carry such load, or do you have to make
special arrangements with a transit provider or ask an academic
network ?
