There's a fundamental difference between the sort of festive environment that is the halmark of a hacker con, and a con that focuses on actually getting shit done... such as workshops and actual round tables between spaces.

I see immense value in getting organizers of spaces together to discuss issues related with spaces in the us. The cross pollenation of ideas, and transference of knowledge would be an asset to all.

An event like that however is not suited to "public access". It's not about exclusion or elitism, it's simply a matter of signal to noise ratio. In that regard I like the idea of a hackerspace congress. But, it's not something that could be done a million times a year.

Either its a regional thing every year, a single massive event somewhere in the world, or maybe regional events with an international every 4 years or so.

Give people time to do it right.

in North America I see 4 distinct regions.

North east, south, and west. Plus the america's hat region.

Maybe have each region do a yearly congress that's easy to do a train / bus / air if you got the cash trip to for but a weekend.

Make it a but more formal than a hack con or makerfaire, but fun.

That's my thought.

Then every fourth year... massive international hackspace event in different locations.

=/ thoughts?

Hackerspace (members) if present should meet up and do great stuff together at these conferences. Just send an email to the organizers for a workshop or go for a dinner together!!
