So the design I have prototyped would be specific to the Arduino. Opto-isolating the input pins makes it much more robust for security/access control applications (especially since most of the readers are powered by +12VDC and the Arduino can only handle 5V) and the relay outputs can be used to control a variety of hardware. I'm thinking this could be used to log attendance, do access control to various zones, run an honor-system or hardware enabled vending system, lock out machines from unauthorized use, control who can open your server rack, etc.

Will see about getting some boards made. I'm thinking a bare-board would be easiest to produce, as the components are all pretty garden-variety.

Arclight

On Mon, Feb 8, 2010 at 2:12 PM, Elmo <elmo.mantynen@iki.fi> wrote:
Crowd funded generally useful openhardware for hackerspaces distributed at near cost? How common is that particular model? Could it be made to usable with other hardware also?
Speaking of which, is there any interest in an Arduino shield board that provides opto-isolated inputs for the Wiegand26 readers and keypads, and 10A relay outputs?
This would be good for access controls, refrigerator accounting at the space, etc.
