Figuring this out early is important!
If you have this issue with over 250 members... well, talk about a
serious problem that becomes difficult to rectify.

When you are the one responsible for collecting dues, you quickly realize how much time it takes to figure out how far behind each of 20+ hackers are in dues, and then have to explain to your friends that they are further back then they realized. We split up the duties of the treasurer because that is the largest "job" in making the space work. At our space we don't charge anything for cash payments, but electronic payments and people who pay cash ahead of the due-date are your friends.

I never mind depositing checks and cash but folks sometimes forget this means a physical trip to the bank for each deposit, and making fewer deposits means a larger pile of cash in-between visits which has it's own dangers. This shouldn't be confused with "automatic withdrawals", yea I don't like those myself and would never force someone to use that type of system. But automatic invoicing and anything else which makes money collection easier for a space should be looked upon favorably.

If you use a service like Amazon Payments, you are notified each time you are billed, and you are able to cancel the payments at any time without any action or approval from the company the payments go to. This is different from a payment where you have given the company your checking account or credit card info directly, which is the case the above poster is describing.
