So the design I have prototyped would be specific to the Arduino.
Opto-isolating the input pins makes it much more robust for security/access
control applications (especially since most of the readers are powered by
+12VDC and the Arduino can only handle 5V) and the relay outputs can be used
to control a variety of hardware. I'm thinking this could be used to log
attendance, do access control to various zones, run an honor-system or
hardware enabled vending system, lock out machines from unauthorized use,
control who can open your server rack, etc.

Will see about getting some boards made. I'm thinking a bare-board would be
easiest to produce, as the components are all pretty garden-variety.
